OCC Hiking Field Leader Course
Earn a nationally recognized Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) Field Leader certification while building the skills and confidence to help lead safe, enjoyable hiking trips.
Join Multicultural Trail Network for this two-day certification course designed for aspiring hike leaders, outdoor volunteers, and recreational hikers looking to strengthen their outdoor leadership skills. Through a combination of classroom learning and hands-on field experience, you'll develop the knowledge and judgment to make informed decisions, manage groups, and prepare for a variety of hiking situations.
Whether you're hoping to volunteer with MTN, lead hikes in your community, or simply become a more knowledgeable and confident hiker, this course will provide practical skills you can use every time you head outdoors.
🧭 What You’ll Learn:
Trip planning and preparation
Group leadership and communication
Risk management and decision-making
Basic navigation and route planning
Environmental stewardship and Leave No Trace principles
Emergency preparedness and incident response
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive Outdoor Council of Canada Field Leader certification.

Dates: Saturday, August 8 (8:45 AM–5:00 PM) & Sunday, August 9 (9:00 AM–4:00 PM)
Locations:
Day 1: Classroom at 10333 Southport Road SE (Southland Park II)
Day 2: Field session at South Glenmore Park
Cost: $40 (Valued at $250)
Who’s Eligible: BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour), Newcomer & Refugee adults (18+)
Registration Deadline: August 2, 2026
💭 What to Expect:
This immersive course blends indoor learning and outdoor fieldwork. Be prepared for:
Up to 6 hours outside on Day 2 — walking, standing, and sitting in varied weather
Be prepared to pack & dress like you would for a day hike
Bringing your own lunch & water on both days
Reading the course manual and completing a short quiz before the course begins
