Do you love hiking and want to learn how to lead safe and meaningful outdoor experiences? Join us for a 2-day certification course designed by the Outdoor Council of Canada (OCC) to develop practical leadership, safety, and trip planning skills — and build your confidence as a group hiking leader.
Trip Planning: Route selection, risk assessment, group dynamics
Risk Management: Emergency preparedness, decision-making in the outdoors
Leadership: Trail navigation, communication, inclusive group leadership
Dates: Saturday, August 2 (8:45 AM–5:00 PM) & Sunday, August 3 (9:00 AM–4:00 PM)
Locations:
Day 1: Classroom at 10333 Southport Road SE (Southland Park II)
Day 2: Field session at South Glenmore Park
Cost: $40 (Valued at $275)
Who’s Eligible: BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour), Newcomer & Refugee adults (18+)
Registration Deadline: Friday, July 25, 2025
This immersive course blends indoor learning and outdoor fieldwork. Be prepared for:
Up to 6 hours outside on Day 2 — walking, standing, and sitting in varied weather
Be prepared to pack & dress like you would for a day hike
Bringing your own lunch & water on both days
Reading the course manual and completing a short quiz before the course begins
This is more than a course — it’s a step toward representation in outdoor leadership. With over 85% of the cost covered by the David Elton Outdoor Fund, the Elton Family, and the OCC, we’re proud to make outdoor education accessible for racialized and newcomer communities.
